Where to Find Them At the Show
The 2020 Vancouver International Wine Festival runs this year from February 22 to March 1. If red Burgundy and pinot noir hold a special interest for you, this year’s festival offers a unique opportunity to compare and contrast pinot noirs from several New World pinot noir regions as well as from the Mother Of Them All … Burgundy.
The countries represented include: France, Argentina, Canada (yes, we’re major, not in terms of quantity as yet but definitely so in terms of quality), Chile, Italy, New Zealand and the United States.
You may wonder why I refer to red Burgundy and pinot noir wines in this guide when red Burgundy is also based on the pinot noir grape? This is out of respect for the longer (by 800 years) Burgundian view that their wines are not about expressing pinot noir but rather they express the terroir as translated by the pinot noir grape. They firmly believe that the appellation overcomes the variety. New world winemakers may choose to differ but they might have to wait a century or two to strengthen their case.
VIWF 2020 presents a great chance to taste Burgundy and pinot noir from a wide variety of terroirs and styles.
Exploring B.C. Pinot Noir GI and Sub-GI Regions
Of the 46 red Burgundy and pinot noir wines available at the festival this year, B.C. is providing 19 (40%) of them drawn from 4 GIs as well as 3 Sub GIs. What are GIs and Sub-GIs?
British Columbia’s relatively new appellation system is based on what are called Geographical Indications or GIs. The new geographical indications were created using a combination of criteria specific to each region. The most important elements were a shared watershed area and/or elevation zones that encompassed both existing and potential growing areas. There are now nine GIs in the province as well as four of what are known as sub-geographical indications (sub-GIs) within the larger area of the Okanagan Valley GI. Sub-GIs demonstrate unique climates, soil types and the resulting wine styles.
This is a great year to begin to familiarize yourself with the GI and Sub-GI designations (that you will soon start seeing on your B.C. wine labels) and taste a range of pinot noirs from B.C. s various regions and terroirs all in one room.
International Wines 2020
On the international side, the featured country France has brought red Burgundy ranging from simple Bourgogne all the way up to Grand Cru as well as pinot noirs from Alsace and the Loire. The United States is showing pinot noirs from Oregon as well as a range from numerous California AVAs including: the Central Coast, Sonoma, Russian River, Lodi and Napa. Pinot noirs from New Zealand, Chile, Argentina and Italy round things out. So if red Burgundy and pinot noir is your thing there are many wines to explore.
Using This As Your Guide to Red Burgundy and Pinot Noir at the Festival
Sometimes the organization of booths in the main tasting room at the festival can seem a little confusing but it is really pretty straight forward. The booths are numbered (from 1 to 163 this year) with the the featured country (France) occupying the first 42 booths which will be in front of you immediately when you come through the entrance of the main tasting room. The rest of the booths from 43 onwards are by arranged alphabetically by country.
All the red Burgundy and pinot noir wines at the festival this year are listed below by booth number so if you are looking at this on your mobile phone you can scroll down as you move in order booth by booth.
If you end up hopping about from booth to booth as happens frequently at the festival, there is also an alphabetical list by winery at the bottom of the booth-by-booth listings.
There are a handful of wines that are only available at the Trade Tastings. They are noted in the booth-by-booth listings but also grouped separately at the very bottom.

Pinot Noir now represents 8% of the total production of Alsace and with global warming the wines are steadily gaining in density. Look for savoury fruit and dusty tannins similar in some ways to spätburgunder.

The Mellot family have been making wine in the Loire Valley since 1513 and own vineyards in all the appellations of the region. The pinot noir grapes for Sincerité, are sourced from a wide range of estate vineyards across the region.

The fruit for this wine is sourced every year from vineyards across the Côte d’Or and Côte Chalonnaise. This wine was aged in French oak for 9 months
Beaune Clos des Ursules 1er Cru 2016
Though the Beaune appellation has no grand cru vineyards it does possess 36 premiers crus and this one is amongst them. Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Ursules is a closed-off portion of the Beaune 1er Cru Vignes Franches. It was purchased in 1826 by Louis Henry Denis Jadot and is solely owned by the Jadot family. This wine rated 93 points with Decanter, Wine Spectator and Robert Parker.
Clos Vougeot Grand Cru 2014 – Trade Only
There are only 33 grand cru appellation on the Cote D’or of Burgundy. The 125 acre Côte de Nuits grand cru vineyard was planted by Cistercian monks beginning in the 12th century. This wine is sourced from a 5 acre parcel in Clos Vougeot owned by Louis Jadot.

Château Corton Grancey Grand Cru 2017 – Trade Only
Corton is the largest grand cru in Burgundy, the only one in the Cote de Beaune and one of only two that produce both reds and whites. The Latour family bought this property in 1891. This wine is a blend of four areas of Domaine Latour Corton Grand Cru: Bressandes, Perrières, Grèves and Clos du Roi. The average age of the vines is over 40 years.

Petite Perrière Pinot Noir 2018
In 1790, the Saget family embarked upon a long history dedicated to vines and wine. La Petite Perrière Pinot Noir is largely sourced from their own estate vineyards in Touraine and part of the blend is sourced from the South of France. Vin de France is a designation for table wine in use since 2010, when it began to replace the former vin de table category.

The Bousquet Family, have a long history of wine making in France and extended their operations to Mendoza beginning in 1990. Their 500 acre estate is located in Tupungato, Uco Valley at 4,000 feet above sea level. The wine is 100% Pinot Noir and aged for 10 months in French oak.

The vineyards on Vancouver Island are located from the central island down to the South with the biggest cluster centered on the Cowichan Valley. Island wineries benefit from the mild maritime climate and have a long growing season with low frost risk.

The Cowichan Valley is the second most important location for pinot noir in B.C. After the Okanagan Valley and Averill Creek is one of its leading producers. The Somenos Series is the winery’s top tier. Look for balanced, nuanced layers of dark and red fruits with a touch of forest floor. Cedar Creek Winery has evolved it’s pinot program steadily since it’s first pinot noir release in 1994. Originally released as three tiers of pinot noir from multiple properties, they evolved to making a “Home Block” Platinum bottling. Two sections (block 2 and block 4) within the Home Block began showing such distinct characteristics in their terroir that they now bottle them separately . The Corcelettes Estate Winery is located on 150 acres in the Similkameen Valley with twenty-seven acres planted to grapes thus far. It succeeded a previous winery called Herder Winery & Vineyard. All wines are made from 100% Similkameen grown grapes.

Booth 67 DA SILVA VINEYARDS – NARAMATA BENCH | Sub-GI
Though the winery was created in 2006 the Da Silvas are long time growers, currently drawing from 11 different vineyards. Previously they released wines under the Misconduct label but the brand is now evolving.

The pinot noir grapes for this wine came from two vineyards near Penticton: the Hidden Hollow Estate Vineyard and the Lazy Dog Vineyard. At one time the Lazy Dog Vineyard also contributed to some of the pinot noirs from Kettle Valley Winery.

The Golden Mile Bench in the Southern Okanagan was the first Sub-GI, created in 2015. Until 2019 the Dark Horse Vineyard was a tier within the Arterra Wines Canada brand called Inniskillin. Now marketed separately, this is the first vintage under its new colours.

The wine was aged eight months in French and American oak. From South and South-East facing vineyards, expect a fuller ripeness with savoury fruit. 300 cases produced.

Heleen Pannekoek and Rolf de Bruin went boldly where few had grown before. Lillooet, is located 325 kilometers north of Vancouver and 140 kilometers east of Whistler just above 50°N in latitude. The first estate vintage of Pinot Noir was 2011. Once grouped under what were known in B.C. as Emerging Regions, Lillooet became a GI in 2018.

The grapes here come from their Dry Creek Estate Vineyard in Lillooet planted with five clones of Pinot Noir in 2009. It won silver medals in 2019 at both the National Wine Awards of Canada and the All Canadian Wine Awards.

Innovation is the norm at Okanagan Crush Pad. In the Free Form series the pinot noir is made and fermented using native yeast in an 800-litre clay amphorae where it ages on skins for a number of months. It is usually pressed and left to rest for an additional two months and then bottled unfiltered. Don’t miss this opportunity to try this unusual take on pinot noir.

This is the first vintage of pinot noir from Haywire’s 320-acre Garnet Valley Ranch, located in Summerland. The first block was planted in 2014. The vineyard blocks are located between 600 and 680 meters above sea level, making it the highest elevated vineyard site in the Okanagan Valley.

La Frenz Winery is known for having consistency vintage after vintage as well as quality across the range of their wines. They produce two pinot noirs, Desperation Hill and a Reserve that is a block selection from the Desperation Hill vineyard.

Laughing Stock does such a great job on other varietals that its pinot noir is often overlooked. It is also rarely seen as it is usually available only at the winery and usually sells out quickly . A great opportunity to taste this pinot noir from the Naramata Sub-GI.

Made with 100% Naramata Bench fruit sourced from the 1 Mill Road and Johnson Vineyards, it was whole berry fermented in oak puncheon and stainless steel, then barrel aged for 16 months in 35% new and 65% neutral French oak. Big but balanced.

Meyer’s supple, elegant, focused fruit pinot noirs have gone a long way in establishing B.C’s growing reputation for world class pinot noirs. Their first pinot noir was released in 2008.

This excellent wine is from Meyer Family Vineyards home vineyard and is remarkably consistent from vintage to vintage.
Old Block Pinot Noir 2018 – Trade Tastings Only
This bottling comes from the original 1 acre block on the home vineyard. The clone is unknown (in keeping with pinot noir’s mysterious nature…) but it regularly produces one of the very top pinot noirs in B.C., always delivering an extra layer and then some of balanced, enticing, precise flavours. A personal favourite.

Reserve Pinot Noir 2018
Moraine made their first vintage of pinot noir in 2012. Dwight Sick who was the winermaker at Stag’s Hollow Winery for over a decade is currently the winemaker. The fruit here is exclusively from their Sophia Estate Vineyard on the Naramata Bench. Made from clone 777 the wine was whole berry fermented with indigenous yeast. It was gravity transferred and aged on the lees in premium French oak barrels for 10 months. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Quails’ Gate is one of the oldest producers of pinot noir in British Columbia. Their original vineyard was purchased in 1956 and they still have one small block of pinot noir planted in 1975.
Stewart Family Reserve Pinot Noir 2017
The Stewart Family Reserve wine has been made now for over twenty-five vintages. It has won numerous medals in Canadian and international competitions over the last 15 years. Look for power with balance here. The 2016 vintage was poured last year at VIWF 2019. I scored it at 91.
Richard’s Block Pinot Noir 2018 – Trade Sessions Only
The Richard’s Block pinot noir was created to honour the winery’s founder. Some of the vines for this wine are more than 30 years old. The clones used are 667, 117 and 115 It was vinified using a combination of indigenous and French cultivated yeast strains and aged for 13 months in French oak barrels from Tonnellerie Montgillard and Maison Louis Latour, prior to being bottled unfined and unfiltered

Also from the Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island, Unsworth released its first pinot noir in 2012 but quickly established a reputation for pinot noir.

The grapes here come 100% from the renowned Saison Vineyard in the North Cowichan Valley a south-facing slope that steadily produces outstanding pinot noir grapes. The clones here are 25% 777, 25% 667 and 50% 828. It was aged in oak barrel for 15 months. The King’s Wrath is sourced from vineyards in the Southern valleys of Marlborough. The wine was fermented a week utilizing strains of yeast isolated from Burgundian vineyards. The wine was then pressed to French oak puncheons (45% new) to mature for 11 months.

The fruit for this pinot noir is sourced from the Wairau and Awatere Valleys in Marlborough. At vinification it is crushed directly into a combination of open and closed top stainless steel fermentation tanks then open top fermented. The wine is matured for up to 12 months.

Grapes for Stoneleigh Latitude are sourced from an area known locally as ‘the Golden Mile in the northern Wairau Valley in New Zealand. The vines are between 10 and 23 years old.
Wild Valley Pinot Noir 2018 – Trade Sessions Only
This wine is 100% wild fermented. The 2016 won a silver medal and the international wine and spirits competition. The 2017 vintage of this wine was poured at VIWF 2019. I scored it a 94.

Calera Winery Central Coast Pinot Noir 2017
There is a story in every glass of wine but as regards North American pinot noir this one contains a particularly interesting and historical tale. In 1975 Josh Jensen purchased land on Mt. Harlan in the remote Gavilan Mountains of the central coast in California. He loved red Burgundy and had become convinced that the secret of great Burgundy was to plant on soils rich in limestone. It turns out there is not that much of this type of plantable soil in California (or Oregon or British Columbia for that matter) but by studying soil maps he discovered that Harlan Mountain had what he believed to be the right stuff. His pursuit of this unicorn led to a lot of personal hardship but in the end Jensen became the first winemaker to demonstrate that world class pinot noir could be produced in California. His story was told in the 2006 book by Canadian author Marc de Villiers called The Heartbreak Grape. That moniker for pinot noir has now passed into the wine language.
In 2017 Duckhorn Wine Company purchased Calera. Jensen joined Duckhorn’s board of directors and was asked to consult for Calera for the next few years.
Drawn from a variety of Central Coast vineyards that include: Bien Nacido, Pedregal, Eden Rift, Laetitia, Besson, Solomon Hills, Muns, Garys’, Flint. The wine saw 100% French oak barrel aging for 10 months with 10% new, 10% second fill and, 80% neutral. The 2016 vintage of this wine was poured at VIWF 2019. I scored it a 93.

Sourced from 100% Estate Vineyards The wine was aged for 10 months in 34% new French oak, 29% one year-old French oak, 24% two year-old French oak, and 13% neutral French oak. 1000 cases produced.
WillaKenzie Estate Willamette Pinot Noir 2016
The first plantings began at this winery in 1992 and the first wine was made in 1995. They produce a range of estate and single vineyard pinot noirs. The winery was sold to Jackson Family Wines in 2016. This wine is all from estate vineyards in the Willamette Valley. 3,000 cases produced.
Siduri Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 2018
Specializing in cool-climate Pinot Noir, Siduri produces mostly single-vineyard, single-variety wines from twenty vineyards stretching from Santa Barbara to the Willamette Valley.
Oregon Zena Crown Vista Pinot Noir 2015 – Trade Sessions Only
Jackson Family Vineyareds purchased the 115-acre vineyard in 2013 and with that vintage released its first Zena Crown Vineyard label. The vineyard is located in the Eola-Amity Hills AVA and was originally developed by Premier Pacific Vineyards in the early 2000s.

Grapes for this wine can come from anywhere in California but Kendall-Jackson has a well deserved reputation for blending consistent and interesting wines from a wide geographical area. The blend here comes from Santa Barbara County 55% and Monterey County 45% .

Oak Ridge Winery is the oldest operating winery in Lodi, California, built in 1934. It is owned by the Maggio & Reynolds families, and produces estate wines under several separate wine labels. The winery itself was once a wine-making cooperative, which the Maggio and Reynolds families purchased in 2002.

The grapes for this wine are fermented in stainless steel at low temperatures. The wine is aged with French oak for a maximum of 8 months.

Napa Carneros Pinot Noir 2017
A portion of the wine was fermented in French oak fermentation tanks to enhance the extraction of color and flavor during the 18 days of skin contact. The new wine was transferred to French Oak barrels (27% new) for malolactic fermentation and seven (7) months of aging. The wine was bottled in June 2018.
